The 2024 Q4 Hospitality Sales Snapshot provides top line sales statistics on the hospitality industry.

As we wrapped up 2024, there was a noticeable shift in the sentiment across New Zealand’s hospitality industry. While the fourth quarter still presented some of the most demanding conditions we’ve seen—marked by economic pressures, workforce shortages, and shifting consumer behavior—there was also a growing sense of optimism among operators. Many operators have indicated that while staffing challenges and tighter customer discretionary spending remain front of mind, the promise of events and international tourism hints at a potential uplift ahead.

With data sourced from Statistics New Zealand and the Restaurant Association, the Q4 Report provides relevant data on the state of the hospitality industry.

Selected highlights:

  • Total sales for the industry over the 4th quarter of 2024, representing a 3.2 per cent sales increase over the same quarter a year previous.
  • The dollar value increase in sales for the hospitality industry over the 4th quarter of 2024 vs the 3rd quarter.
  • Dollar value of sales for the restaurant and cafe sector for the 4th quarter of 2024. This sector has a 48.8 per cent sales market share of the industry overall.
  • Regionally, revenue growth in the Queenstown-Lakes region was the most significant for the 4th quarter of 2024 vs the previous year. In dollar value, the region increased from $113.2 million sales in Q4 2023 to $133.6 million sales in Q4 2024. Kaikoura’s revenue growth was also significant at 25.5 per cent growth over the same period the year previous.

  • Regionally, revenue growth vs the previous year in the Taranaki region was highest for the 2nd quarter of 2024. In dollar value, the region increased from $55.8 million sales in Q2 2023 to $63.4 million sales in Q2 2024. Queenstown-Lakes revenue growth was 9.3 per cent growth over the same period the year previous.

2024 Hospitality Report

The 2024 Hospitality Report provides top line statistics on the hospitality industry.

With data sourced from Statistics New Zealand and the Restaurant Association, the 2024 Hospitality Report provides relevant data on the state of the hospitality industry.

Selected highlights:

  • Annual sales for the year ended March 2024 reached $15.7 billion, reflecting national sales growth of 5.8 per cent over the previous year. Notably over this period menu pricing grew by 6.4 per cent, operational costs increased significantly in key areas and inflation overall was 4 per cent, indicating sales growth lags behind cost increases.
  • The restaurant and cafe sector recorded sales growth of 4.6 per cent in 2024, reaching $7.8 billion in annual sales (and posting sales $344 million more than 2023).
  • Despite the challenges in 2023 in the aftermath of the country’s devastating weather events, in 2024 (year end March) the Gisborne region recorded the largest percentage sales growth over the previous year. Annual sales for the region are $127.4 million.
  • The catering sector, which through the Covid-19 pandemic was decimated by the cancellation of events and functions, posted the largest percentage sales increase for the industry compared to 2023. Sales for this sector grew 19.4 per cent (for the year ended March 2024).
  • 145,000 employees work in the hospitality industry. Employee growth across the industry was 7.3 per cent from 2022-2023. This is a growth rate that far exceeds the growth in outlets over the same period.

  • The fourth quarter of 2023 reported a growth rate of 4.2 per cent over the year previous.
  • Total sales for the industry over the 4th quarter of 2023 were $4.1 billion, representing 4.2 per cent sales growth over the same quarter in 2022.
  • Dollar value of sales for the restaurant and cafe sector over the 4th quarter of 2023 was $2.0 billion.
  • Regionally, revenue growth vs the previous year in the Gisborne region was highest for the 4th quarter of 2023 (41.9 per cent). This was followed by Queenstown-Lakes at 12.9 per cent growth over the same period in 2022.

  • Total sales for the industry over the 3rd quarter of 2023 were $3.86 billion, representing 4.2 per cent sales growth over the same quarter in 2022.
  • Dollar value of sales for the restaurant and cafe sector over the 3rd quarter of 2023 was $1.89 billion.
  • Regionally, revenue growth vs the previous year in West Coast (South Island) was highest for the 3rd quarter of 2023 (15.4 per cent). This was followed by Queenstown-Lakes at 8.3 per cent growth over the same period in 2022.

The 2023 Q2 Hospitality Sales Snapshot provides top line statistics on the hospitality industry.

Selected highlights:

  • Although the second quarter of 2023 reported a growth rate of 9.8%, notably, menu pricing has also risen by a comparable percentage of 9.2%, playing a significant role in this growth and reflecting necessary price adjustments.
  • Total sales for the industry over the 2nd quarter of 2023 were $3.77 billion, representing 9.8 per cent sales growth over the same quarter in 2022.
  • Dollar value of sales for the restaurant and cafe sector over the 2nd quarter of 2023 was $1.86 billion.
  • Regionally, revenue growth vs the previous year in Kaikoura was highest for the 2nd quarter of 2023. This was followed by Queenstown-Lakes at 30 per cent growth over the same period in 2022.

2022 Hospitality Report

The 2022 Hospitality Report provides top line statistics on the hospitality industry.

With data sourced from Statistics New Zealand and the Restaurant Association, the 2022 Hospitality Report provides relevant data on the state of the hospitality industry.

Selected highlights:

  • Annual sales for the year ended September 2022 bounced back to reach a record high of $13.38 billion. This is a return to pre-Covid trading levels and is up 7.7 per cent over the previous year.
  • The food to go / takeaway sector had the largest growth in 2022, reaching $3.8 billion in annual sales (and posting sales $517 million more than 2021). This represents growth of 15.8 per cent.
  • In 2022 the Queenstown-Lakes region had the largest percentage sales growth – 13.2 per cent. However, sales levels for this region are still some way off pre-Covid trading levels.
  • The catering sector, which last year was decimated by the cancellation of events and functions, posted a percentage sales increase compared to 2021 of 8.4 per cent (for the year ended September 2022).
