hospitality & restaurant spending insights

The Restaurant Association of New Zealand, along with Hospitality NZ and DOT Loves Data, have developed an exclusive member portal that delivers reliable, frequent, and consistent data insights on the performance of the hospitality sector —giving you the competitive edge you need. Until now, understanding market trends and measuring current spend has been limited due to a lack of accessible data. That has now changed. Through the development of a hospitality data portal we’re bringing powerful consumer transaction data to New Zealand’s hospitality industry for the first time. What you’ll uncover:

  • The size of the hospitality and restaurant tourism market spend, both internationally and domestically
  • Who your customers are and what their loyalty (or frequency) is
  • Tourism spend relative to local spend
  • The spend origin (international or regional).

All of this is available as monthly breakdown and broken down into every regional district across Aotearoa.

Important: Make sure you’re logged into this website first (login link is on the top right of the screen), then follow these steps:

  1. Locate the red button – once logged in, you’ll see a red “Access Tourism Data” button at the top of the page
  2. Enter the portal – click the button to open the Spending Insights portal and dashboard (Community Compass)
  3. Navigate to spending data – The button should take you straight to the Consumer Spend insights, but you can also access via the left-hand menu, select Consumer Spend, then choose your preferred view: In-Store Spend | Demographic Spend | Online Spend
  4. Filter your results – Customize your data by: Date (month), District/Region, Spend Category (e.g., Food & Drink), and Spender Type

You can view a Community Compass user guide here.

Access key insights that reveal who your customers are, where they come from, how much they spend, and what drives their purchasing behaviour.

Insight 1. What is the split between local vs domestic tourism vs international tourism in food and beverage?

Total spend ($) & number of transactions made by locals | Total spend ($) & number of transactions made by domestic tourists | Total spend ($) & number of transactions made by international tourists
