The Journey of Francesca's Mobile Pizza

For over a decade, Francesca’s Mobile Pizza has been serving up wood-fired favourites across Central Otago. What began as Francesca and James Voza’s venture in Wanaka has found its permanent home in Queenstown under the passionate ownership of Pete Dodds and Jessica Patterson, who have been delighting locals and visitors for the past three years.

We sat down with Jessica to learn about their love for great food, exceptional people, and what keeps them rolling in one of New Zealand’s most stunning regions.

What drew you into the hospitality industry?

“Our love of great food and the ever-changing daily operations of hospitality—it’s super challenging and rewarding all at the same time. Every day brings something different, and that keeps us energised.”

Who or what inspires you most?

“I love making people happy, so essentially, people are my driving force. It’s important that our staff feel valued and included, that they feel essential to our operation. This drive helps ensure we’re keeping our products and services at the highest level, which encourages customers to keep coming back. If the staff and customers are happy, then Pete and I are too. It’s a win-win situation.”

What do you love most about working in Central Otago’s hospitality scene?

“We love the food and drinks, but mostly we love hearing people’s stories—where they’re from and what keeps them here in Central. Living in one of the most beautiful places in the South Island means we have access to amazing produce and wines, but most importantly, we’re surrounded by fabulous people from New Zealand and all over the world.”

What’s the secret to your success?

“People. People are the reason we’re successful. It’s all about finding the right people to work with—those who share similar values and tastes, and who genuinely want to offer amazing hospitality. It’s a simple secret, really. Our people are our most valuable asset.”

What advice would you give to others in the industry?

“Don’t try to do too much. If you have a business plan, keep it simple. Do a few things really well and execute them perfectly. Quality over quantity, always.”

Which restaurants are on your dining bucket list?

“Locally, we love Rāge in Wanaka. Internationally, Harukiya in Ogikubo, Tokyo is definitely on our must-visit list.”

How do you unwind in your spare time?

“We love having other hospitality venues take care of us for a change! We enjoy sampling the latest dishes from our favourite chefs, tasting different vintages of our favourite wines, and exploring our backyard. The Queenstown Lakes region has some of the best biking and walking trails, plus secret swimming spots when the weather permits. There’s always something new to discover.”
