Shining Peak Brewery and Social Kitchen lead the pack with four nominations

Local producers take the spotlight in new producer award category

The cream of the Taranaki hospitality industry is to be celebrated at the Taranaki Hospitality Awards; an industry event aimed at highlighting the very best of the region.

Among the finalists named in this year’s Awards, is microbrewery and eatery Shining Peak Brewery which is nominated for front of house team, outstanding bar, ambience and design along with outstanding bartender for Luke Anderson.

Located in an industrial art deco warehouse, the philosophy is to drink beer and do good with five per cent of beer purchases going to local Taranaki charities.

Social Kitchen is also nominated for four awards including outstanding restaurant, front of house team, ambience and design and emerging chef for Ido Doron.

Situated in the former Salvation Army Citadel, the Social Kitchen’s cosy environment is centred around locally sourced meats cooked over a Mibrasa charcoal oven.

The Taranki region is not short of top places to dine with Ember, Meat and Liquor Steakhouse, Social Kitchen and Toret – Cucina all nominated for outstanding restaurant.

Owned by husband and wife team Nicolo and Katie Vogliotto, Toret aims to create an authentic Italian dining experience using seasonal NZ produce. The restaurant is nominated for three awards including best regional establishment.

Anyone looking for the best brunch and brew in town should check out the line up of finalists for outstanding café and best barista.

Elixir Café, Lush Cafe & Gelato, Monica’s Eatery and Wild Pear Kitchen all make the finalist for best café while Connor Vincent (Antidote Coffee), Darcy Holden (Proof & Stock Coffee), Tairi Paratainga (The Backyard Café) and Tori Mowatt (The Public Catering Company) are all up for best barista.

In a new category for 2022, local producers take the spotlight with Juno Gin, Natural Fare Ltd, Roebuck Farm and Six Acres Farm all nominated for the best local producer award.

The Taranaki Hospitality Awards celebrate and promote the region’s food and beverage offerings, recognising the champions who deliver the flavours, experiences and gastronomic wonders bringing visitors from near and far to the region.

Brought to you by the Restaurant Association of New Zealand with the support of lead sponsor Gilmours, the Taranaki Hospitality Awards are all about celebrating and promoting the excellence of the region’s food and beverage offerings.

Awards are given in 15 categories, providing recognition for individuals – both industry experts as well as emerging talent – and establishments of all kinds.

Final voting begins on Tuesday 9th August and winners will be revealed on 5th September at an event held at TSB Showplace, New Plymouth as the culminative event at Feastival.

Restaurant Association CEO Marisa Bidois says that as hospitality starts its recovery from several challenging years, it is encouraging to see the diversity of dining experiences on offer. “Taranaki is becoming a popular tourist destination attracting both domestic and international visitors so it’s no surprise to see new and innovative hospitality venues cropping up.”

“The awards give us a great opportunity to celebrate their successes and give people a reason to go out and sample them.”

In addition to the judged entries in 14 categories, Bidois says the Taranaki community is invited to vote for their favourite establishment in The Hit’s People’s Choice Award category. Voting is through the Hospitality Awards website (see below).
