Each year our industry’s cafes and restaurants discard a staggering 25,000 tonnes of food, and here’s the kicker: 61% of it is avoidable! Not only is this harmful to the environment, but it’s also costing our businesses millions of dollars. That’s where we come in! The Restaurant Association, in collaboration with Edge Impact, is dedicated to addressing this issue and creating a sustainable future.
The Food Waste Behaviour Change Pilot
Starting in February 2024 a pilot involving 120 cafes and restaurants across Auckland and the Bay of Plenty regions will get underway, run in two key stages and will help inform a nationwide programmer roll out . The pilot will enable businesses to:
- Measure the current food waste in their kitchen
- Test innovative behavior change interventions to reduce food waste and reduce costs
- Help shape a nationwide initiative
What’s Involved?
Participating establishments will complete both a 1-week baseline food waste assessment (between February – April 2024) and a 4-week pilot programme (between July 2024 – February 2025)
Auckland & Bay of Plenty businesses are being invited to take part in this transformative project, where we’ll be there every step of the way. We’ll provide training, answer questions, and offer assistance. The pilot is designed to minimize disruption to your business while providing invaluable insights and guidance on reducing food waste.
