Getting a Good Night’s Sleep Every Night

posted on

For Mental Health Awareness Week, Clearhead are shining a light on the close relationship between sleep and mental health. Whether you have a sleep condition like insomnia, are experiencing increased stress levels, or are simply trying to keep up with a schedule that doesn’t work in your favour, one thing is clear – not getting enough sleep can take a huge toll on your wellbeing.

In this webinar, we’ll be joined by “The Sleep Doctor” Dr. Michael Breus to learn how use sleep as a tool to improve our mental health, and how to set ourselves up to have a good night’s sleep, every night.

Dr. Michael Breus, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist and clinical sleep specialist who has been in private practice for 23 years. He is the founder of sleepdoctor.com, has served as the sleep expert for WebMD for over 14 years, and has recently been named the top sleep specialist in California by Reader’s Digest and one of the 10 most influential people in sleep.

His topics of expertise include the science of sleep and peak performance, sleep disorders such as sleep apnoea, narcolepsy, and insomnia, and learning how to harness “the power of when,” to create a sleep schedule that works best for you (so that counting sheep doesn’t have to be at the frontline of your wellbeing strategy).

By attending this webinar, you will learn:

  • How to determine if you are getting enough quality sleep each night
  • The physical and mental side effects of sleep deprivation
  • How caffeine, alcohol, and screen time can affect our sleep schedules
  • The role of exercise in getting a good night’s sleep
  • If it’s okay to have naps and how to avoid “crashing” during the day
  • The effect that stress or mental health issues can have on our sleep, and vice versa
  • What our body’s “inner clock” is and if it’s possible to rewire it
  • Some common signs of sleep disorders such as insomnia or sleep apnoea, and how they are treated
  • How to navigate your sleep schedule if it is inconsistent (e.g. if you often experience interruptions because of children, living with others, or doing shift work)
  • Some practical tips for improving sleep hygiene

Learning how to get enough quality rest is crucial, as sleep helps our body to process emotions and memories, physically repair and recover from stress, and take time to reset so we are set up to tackle whatever a new day might bring.

Open Minds – Mental Health Support

posted on

The hospitality industry is known for its high-pressure environment, long hours, and constant interaction with customers—often with a smile, regardless of what’s going on behind the scenes. Unfortunately, these factors can lead to stress, anxiety, depression, burnout, and suicide.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we encourage you, as leaders, to take this e-learning course and learn how you can support employees with mental health struggles.

Open Minds E-learning

The Mental Health Foundation has developed three e-learning modules aimed at supporting people managers and workplace wellbeing professionals to open up the conversation about mental health in the workplace, and support team members

Topics you’ll find in each module are:

Module 1: Building trust and engagement

  • The barriers to talking about mental health in the workplace
  • How to make mental health conversations easier
  • What we mean by ‘mental health’

Module 2: Problem solving together

  • Normalising mental health conversations at work
  • Legal obligations around mental health
  • How to find positive solutions with an employee experiencing mental distress or illness
  • How to support someone during time off work, and their return

Module 3: Building mentally healthy workplaces

  • What makes a mentally healthy workplace
  • Non-discriminatory policies and processes
  • How to be a mental health champion and influence upwards

The modules should take no more than one hour each to complete. They are designed to be user-friendly so can be done on the go from your mobile phone. Don’t worry if you only get part way through a module, your progress will be saved so you can pick up where you left off.
