Mental Health Awareness Week: Q&A with Chef Ben Bayly

posted on

A few weeks ago we ask Chef and Owner Operator Ben Bayly to share some thoughts with us on Mental Health and the theme of this year’s awareness week, taking time to kōrero.

How does having a chat/kōrero with others make you feel?
When you chat and talk out loud, you can flesh things out. You gain another perspective, “More heads together make things better” if you don’t chat your thoughts can become toxic and unreasonable. Use other peoples experiences to help you with your problems.

Who in your life would you reach out to if you’re having a tough time?
Wife, Friends, business partners. My exclusive support group that I TRUST.

Is there anything you do to lift your general well-being?
Exercise- my personality is a Husky, I need to be run, I cannot be couped up.

Can you give us an example of a time a chat/kōrero helped you/made you feel better?
Right now we are in Lockdown. I am trying to run business with ZERO income, pay staff, deal with landlords, plan for level 3 & 2 when we just don’t know when we will be there. its fucked up. Without the support & conversations with my Wife, my friends and business partners I would be up shit creek.

One of our daily themes this year is ‘Come together and reflect’. Who are the people you spend time with the most and what do you get up to that uplifts your wellbeing?
Right now I loving the time with my Children, as I write this my kids are our dining room table with me doing their school work. We are doing times tables, English, religious studies. its really cool and a am super grateful for the extra time we are having together right now and I do not want it to change as it fills me with such joy…
