The Restaurant Association’s Education Trust scholarship programme assists chefs, front of house personnel, apprentices, tutors, and promising high school and hospitality students in furthering their career paths within the hospitality and foodservice industry.

There are nine hospitality scholarships on offer and you can find out more about each sholarship below.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS
Three scholarships are available each year ($3,500.00 each) for secondary school students planning to work towards a national recognised hospitality qualification. They are available to those who are demonstrating a commitment to both a tertiary hospitality education and a career in the hospitality/foodservice industry.Students wishing to be considered for this scholarship must:

    Have achieved at least 8 NCEA credits in Level 1 Literacy and 8 NCEA credits in Level 1 Numeracy and who holds HSI unit standard 167.

    Have performed a minimum of 250 hours of restaurant/foodservice work experience verified by wage slips or letter(s) from employer(s)

    Have gained acceptance to a nationally recognised hospitality programme, full-time, and plans to enroll for a minimum of 24 weeks

    Submit a letter of recommendation on letterhead from a current/previous employer.

    Submit a letter from School stating the years progress

    Complete a Scholarship Application.

    Write a 300 word essay on a given topic.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR HOSPITALITY STUDENTS
Four scholarships (in total) of $3,500.00 are available each year for focused individuals who have a passion in their chosen profession and are pursuing further training through tertiary hospitality training or a Modern Apprenticeship programme. One of those scholarships will be allocated to an apprentice enrolled with the Restaurant Association of New Zealand Group Modern Apprenticeship programme. Students enrolled in a hospitality programme at a training institution apply for this scholarship. The student must:

    Have applied or gained acceptance for study of Level 4 HSI unit standards or equivalent.

    Have a minimum of 1500 hours of work experience in the hospitality/foodservice industry verified by wage slips or letter(s) from employer(s); and

    Submit a letter of recommendation on letterhead from a current/previous employer.

    Complete a Scholarship Application.

    Write a 300 word essay on a given topic.

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MODERN APPRENTICES

Four scholarships (in total) of $3,500.00 are available each year for focused individuals who have a passion in their chosen profession and are pursuing further training through tertiary hospitality training or a Modern Apprenticeship programme. One of those scholarships will be allocated to an apprentice enrolled with the Restaurant Association of New Zealand Group Modern Apprenticeship programme.Apprentices should apply for this scholarship (rather than the Merit Scholarship for Hospitality Students). They must:

    Have begun an apprenticeship through the Restaurant Association Group Modern Apprenticeship programme or other

    Have successfully completed Module One (or any further Modules) of the Modern Apprenticeship programme

    Submit a letter of recommendation on letterhead from a current/previous employer and form the Modern Apprenticeship Co-ordinator.

    Complete a Scholarship Application.

    Write a 300 word essay on a given topic.

TUTOR WORK STUDY GRANT

The purpose of this Award is for the recipient to gain knowledge and insight into today’s work environment which in turn will benefit students who gain from learning from a tutor with tangible “hands on” industry work experience. The Grant is for work / study which could be carried out in several venues and may be New Zealand based or international work experience.One grant is available each year. The applicant must:

    Be a full-time Tutor or Teacher of a hospitality/foodservice-related programme in a Training establishment offering HSI or equivalent qualifications.

    Have not received a similar award in the past three years.

    Provide a letter of support from the Training establishment they are employed at.

    Complete a Scholarship Application.

    Write a 600 word essay on a given topic.

Award Amount: $5,000.00

Awards distributed by: $2,500.00 one month prior to start of work study experience and $2,500.00 - following a report of work-study completed.



CONTINUING EDUCATION GRANT

This Grant is for hospitality professionals who are currently employed in a New Zealand hospitality/foodservice workplace. It is intended to be used for continuing education in the area of hospitality. This may include New Zealand based or international education or training, or practical work experience that will benefit the professional and their place of work. One Grant is available each year. The applicant must:

    Be a full-time hospitality/foodservice professional.

    Have not received a similar award in the past three years.

    Provide details of continuing education.

    Provide a letter of recommendation from an Industry Colleague.

    Complete a Scholarship Application.

    Write a 600 word essay on a given topic.

Award Amount: $12,000.00

Awards distributed by: $6,000.00 one month prior to start of the course, training or work experience and $6,000.00 - upon successful competition of the course, training or work experience.
